A Refreshed Look

In 2018 WeRoster got a cleaner design with a big focus on phones. Here's what changed then, and how that thinking carries on today.

In 2018 we gave WeRoster a refreshed design. Small features had piled up over the previous couple of years and some screens had started to feel cluttered, especially for someone logging in for the first time. So we stripped things back, tidied the layout and made the staff timetable work properly on a phone.

That last part mattered most. Managers build rosters on a laptop at the back of the shop. Staff check them on their phone on the bus. If the timetable is awkward on a small screen, people stop checking it and start texting the manager instead, which defeats the point.

What changed in the 2018 redesign?

The staff Timetable page became responsive, so the week's shifts read cleanly on a phone without pinching and zooming. Menus were simplified, and a lot of the visual noise that had crept in around smaller features was removed.

Is WeRoster still built for phones?

Yes, more than ever. Since that first refresh the design has been reworked again, and the rule hasn't changed: anything a staff member needs should work well on their phone. Staff can check their timetable, set their availability, request leave and clock in and out from any web browser. There's nothing to install.

Managers get the same treatment. The roster editor works with a mouse on a computer and with taps on a phone or tablet: tap where a shift starts, then tap where it ends.

Where should I send design feedback?

If something looks wrong on your device, or a screen is harder to use than it should be, email [email protected]. A screenshot helps a lot. Feedback from managers and staff is how most of these improvements get found.

Frequently asked questions

Does WeRoster have an app?

WeRoster runs in the web browser on any phone, tablet or computer, so staff don't need to download anything. They log in at weroster.co.nz.

Can staff see their roster on their phone?

Yes. The Timetable page shows each staff member their shifts for the week, and they can also subscribe to a calendar feed so shifts appear in Apple, Google or Outlook calendar.

Can I build a roster on a phone?

You can. The roster editor supports touch, though most managers find a bigger screen more comfortable for building a full week.
